Doghouse roses are a two-piece folk from Scotland, with singer Iona Macdonald and guitarist Paul Tasker and on this their first full-length record they have been joined by half a dozen accomplished musicians.

These include the Scottish Opera’s principle cellist Robert Irvine. Macdonald has a terrific voice which soars above this record whether taking lead vocal duties or joining other members of the band on some lovely harmonies. Of course this is a folk record and the influence of Pentangle, Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny can be heard on many of the songs. It’s a very traditional recording with songs ‘Greener The Grass’, ‘Pilgrim’s Tale’, and ‘Border Hills’ examining their roots, and on the other songs the changing seasons and romantic themes are explored, especially on the fabulous ‘You Are On My Mind’. An acoustic record with a stark sound, this duo should be on Folk On Radio 2 - you will have to travel a long way to find a better folk record. (7/10)
