This Broken Key

1. AtonementDoghouse Roses - This Broken Key

I was born to this world alone
When I leave that’s how I’ll go
Has the world gone crazy?
Who is going to save me now?

All you righteous step aside
Here, here come the sinners and the liars
Bare their soul to a holy man
He will wash the blood clean off their hands now

On that bandit road to Jericho
Would you stop and help me as you go?
See the look of death upon my face
Could you justify your faith?

For all of those who came before
These same questions rolled and roared
But when the questions turn to blame
We are acting in our own name

I was born to this world alone
When I leave that’s how I’ll go
Has the world gone crazy?
Who is going to save me now?

2. Woodstock

Stayed up all night, just passing time
And I hope that morning finds me
On my way home, I got caught in the light
Caught with my hand on the stop cork
Take me down low

He’s thirty years old, I met him days before
We made love by the bridge at nightfall
Watching the waves where the sea meets the shore
And the river rolls and tumbles
Rolls and tumbles

Tomorrow comes we’ll just get out
Eleven days and just ten nights
Never once thought I’d bed down
We’re a long way from Woodstock now

Made bail by nine, got fined that’s all
Left the court room by nine thirty
Met him at the door and we walked across the hall
Waited to get married
In our clothes from the night before
The river rolls and tumbles, rolls and tumbles
How that river rolls and tumbles
Take me down low

Morning came we just got out
A thousand days, now a thousand nights
Never once thought I’d bed down
Now I feel no urge to roam
We’re a long way from Woodstock now

3. Trouble Gathering

Upon the turnpike
A thousand tears shed
From a dozen tired eyes
Farewell to the country
Goodbye mother earth
I didn’t mean to make you cry
It’s not raining on the other side of town
And the rain it burns my skin
Nothing moves there just the air
And trouble gathering

Been twenty years since
This old mill shut its door
For one final time
Now we’re getting ready to leave this house and home
Where I thought we’d spend our lives
It’s no better on the other side of town
Where the clouds are closing in
Nothing moves here but the air
And trouble gathering

I bent the metal
Put iron in the ground
That secured this little town
Rising prices cheaper to hire from afar
So I’m loading shelves to keep me warm
I hear it’s raining on the other side of town
And the water’s coming in
Nothing moves here but the air
And trouble gathering

4. Thunder of the Dawn

Sail on All Hallows, All Hallows Eve
It’s not the sort of night with no place to be
Any way the wind swept, I went too
And I’ve been out on open plain
I took my chances when they came
And I’ve been looking backwards, or it feels that way for so long
To the thunder at the dawn

Keep the fire burning, keep it burning bright
Buried my feelings deep, kept them out of sight
For every step I captured, I fell back two
And it’s a headache now alright
To keep your peace with lady life
I’m holding on so tight, as we’ve all got to live on
Past the thunder at the dawn

Tired and no respite, I keep returning
Honey will you be my friend, be my friend
Well close my eyes and Lord let me in again

Give me shelter sister, you’ve been here before
Left behind your flag so proudly worn
Now I’m the one returning it to you
That flag both tattered now and torn
Of a battle so hard won
And I’ve been wishing on it, it feels like time to move on
From the thunder at the dawn

5. Twisted Wheel

I’m sick of this place
And all the memories this twisted wheel has made
Going nowhere fast, alone and afraid
And the tide is coming in

So I sit and I wait
Raise a broken glass of champagne
To all the triumphs that should have borne my name
But drifted away

Looking for a forest in a tree
I know the answers are in me
But how to open up and see
With just this broken key

The first time you fall
There’s someone there to take it all away
But when all you’ve known is the floor for years
There’s no one there

It didn’t take long
To drive them all away
Maybe if I’d been stronger
I could have made them stay for longer

Looking for a forest in a tree
I know the answers are in me
But how to open and see
With just this broken key

6. The Rain

Lord don’t call me, I’ve just begun
Promises drip like silver in the harvest sun
And I’m not afraid to leave this life
I’m not afraid to be standing
At the gallows side

Minutes drag as the day it sighs
I held onto the moment, like a desperate lie
And from the east the rain came in
Washed away these chalk words
Like a thousand sins

It keeps me clean
It keeps me clean
It keeps me clean
For my journey on
For my journey on

Oh the night fell low
Though about my ambush on the shooters hill
Charged with being the highway kind
Took my chances, fled there
Left it all behind

Dawn long fingers touch the sky
I’ve done much worse than they know, I’ll be judged on high
Cobbled road and morning air
Walked into the morning
Not to return again

It keeps me clean
It keeps me clean
It keeps me clean
For my journey on
For my journey on
For my journey on

7. Blue Moon on the Mountain

Counting all the time left in a candle
Reading all the words between the lines
Before the start of one last time

Working in one place just drove me crazy
Living on the road just ain’t no life
Gonna miss me when I’m gone
As the days go by

Blue moon on the mountain won’t you come and ease my mind

You can take the man out of his country
You can even take the country out a man
But not the land on which he stands

My land seems to stand upon the ocean
The ocean reaches up to drown the land
Oh raise your glass, raise and burn
Every loaded page, which I now turn

Blue moon on the mountain won’t you come and ease my mind

Never’s such a lonely word
I’ll take your hand and tell you
It’s alright, it’s alright

Sail on silver bird
Berlin through Schiphol and homeward
Cold winters night, cold winters night

Counting all the time left in a candle
Reading all the words between the lines
Before the start of one last time

Blue moon on the mountain won’t you come and ease my mind
Blue moon on the mountain won’t you come and ease my mind

8. Any Kind of Love

I’ve been many different people, in my life up to now
There’s those I could look up to
And those who’s reflection I’d strive to deny

Walking on this rough track, looking back to see
The bridges all a burning, which carry the straight road
From the mountains to the sea

That sort of love’s something you read about, though in more than just a name
Oh it’s waiting where you left and not having to start
All over again

But I get tired of waiting and the weight that’s tied to me
Well it pushes to the earth and I need to be moving
To be able to break free

And I travel all around and I find this much is true
When all is dead and buried I usually find
Any kind of love will do
And kind of love will do
Oh when all is dead and buried I usually find
Any kind of love will do

The times just keep growing, it feels like you’ve got to be
Always in the middle, ready and willing
To waive your reprieve

But I’m waving at nothing, not at you as you say goodbye
In another hotel room, replaying it over
TV flickers in my eyes

I’m watching without feeling, his body lying next to me
In a strangers arms I’m losing, all the tomorrows
I don’t really want to see

Tomorrow I’ll be somewhere different; I heard his voice thin and dry
In the light of the morning you might see yourself reflected
In the mirror of our lies

And I travel all around and I find this much is true
When all is dead and buried I usually find
Any kind of love will do
And kind of love will do
Oh when all is dead and buried I usually find
Any kind of love will do

9. Survival

You’ve been gone for a long long time
Now you’re heading back to the right side of the line
Your demons will survive
But you’ll silence them, it’ll just take time
You’ll silence them in your own sweet time

They never promised an easy life
But you’ll only fail if you never try
Some things just pass you by
But they’ll come around in a little while
Will you be ready when the time is right?

It doesn’t take much to close you down
In the dark silence of the night
Fill the empty of your eyes
It’s a game of chance and you lost last time
Now the odds are stacking up on your side
Your demons will survive
But you’ll silence them in a little while
Your demons will survive
But you’ll silence them in your own sweet time

10. Evermore

Sixteen miles from freedom
Fifteen from heading back
To the grey zone in the twilight
Where for so long I was trapped
Never superstitious, but I still rely on luck
And as long as I remember, there’s never been enough
So I’ll drink to those still with me, drink to those there no more
In the half light of morning, there I’ll see you evermore
And I hear all sorts of voices, like the ones that never tire
Of wrapping words around paper notes and cast them to the fire
Into the fire we’re ushered and into that fire born
And set adrift to the ocean wide
 ‘til you’re free evermore
‘til you’re free evermore

It’s left just past the gasworks
Then straight on ‘til you come
To the sign saying welcome, don’t you feel like you belong?
If you’re feeling cold and lonely, then you know where you can turn
There’s a friend all around you, so don’t think that you can run
When there’s no one there to turn to, you’ll be there all alone
Don’t threaten me with promises that you cannot uphold
Cos I wanna face you solo, wanna see you one on one
That sort of luck you’re casting down just can’t be undone
So forgive me this anger and give me strength to carry on
To try my best, but I won’t forgive you for what you’ve done
Christ I won’t forgive you for what you’ve done

11. Devil in me

The devil in me lies in waiting
With malevolent greed
Anticipating the day when it all falls apart
The day when I haven’t the heart to say
Leave me be, leave me be

The devil in me dances daily
With a sinister glee
When he hears the thoughts that he planted in my mind
Come forth when I haven’t the time to say
Leave me be, leave me be

Oh the devil in me won’t come to rest
He’s fought them all, beaten the best
Touting his wares at the crossing of roads
Your wildest dreams for your mortal soul
But there’s no heading back
From the deep dark black
Or the devil in me
He won’t leave me be

The devil in me hides in the shadows
Patiently
Ready to surface when this heart lies silent in my chest
The moment when I haven’t a breath to say
Won’t you leave me be
Leave me be
Devil in me

12. The Highwayman

Made my way back up north
This scarf around my shoulders kept me warm
Against the night, on horseback I made
London to Glasgow in three days

Sorry I’ll leave you alone
But I’ve not known anything but this from when I was young
Seems to me that all we have is to remember

Stop a while, to start anew
But the hounds that follow don’t need the rest, I do
Near the Tron, the city gates
I felt the icy touch of what awaits

Three nights before, as I watched you sleep
Well I couldn’t say goodbye no more than you could follow me
Here and now, I can’t stand to remember

A troubled head pays no mind
And trouble is an easy thing to find
So when I’ve done I won’t sit on high
I’ve just taken what I’ve wanted my whole life

Said again, as I’ve said before
You were the only one worth dying for
I’ve been run, now the chase is through
I’m gonna stand and see the promise that I made through
All I ask is that you will remember
